Curriculum-Based Measurement

Curriculum-Based Measurement (CBM) is the method for scientifically based monitoring student progress using time efficient, accurate, and frequent assessment of basic skills. CBM is used to assess skills such as general reading achievement, reading comprehension, spelling, mathematics, and written expression. Early literacy skills (phonics and phonological awareness) and early Numeracy (number sense) are constructed similarly to form downward extensions of CBM.

CBM assessment practices are based on over 25 years of scientific research. These standardized tests are time efficient and inexpensive, yet produce accurate charts of student growth over time.

CBM measures last from 1 to 4 minutes depending on the academic area being assessed and have been validated to represent critical growth indicators of student achievement. Because CBM measures are quick to administer and simple to score, they can be given frequently to provide continuous progress data. The results are charted and provide for timely evaluation based on hard data.

Pearson has developed the following CBM measures for the AIMSweb system:

  • Reading-CBM: Oral Reading Fluency
  • Spanish Reading-CBM: Oral Reading Fluency
  • Maze-CBM: Reading Comprehension
  • Test of Early Literacy (TEL)
  • MIDE-CBM: Spanish Early Literacy
  • Test of Early Numeracy (TEN)
  • Mathematics-CBM: Math Computation | Math Facts
  • Spelling-CBM: Spelling
  • Written Expression-CBM: Writing

AIMSweb also organizes and reports DIBELS data and CBM Mathematics Applications outcomes that are available from PRO-ED.
